All the Antarctic islands and territories
between 160 degrees E and 150 degrees W
longitude and S of 60 degrees S latitude; it
includes Edward VII Land, Ross Sea and its
islands, and parts of Victoria Land. area
450,000 sq km/173,700 sq mi
features the Ross Ice Shelf (or Ross
Barrier), a permanent layer of ice across the
Ross Sea about 425 m/1,400 ft thick
population a few scientific bases with about
250 staff members, 12 of whom are present
during winter history given to New Zealand
1923. It is probable that marine organisms
beneath the ice shelf had been undisturbed
from the Pleistocene period until drillings
were made 1976.
